Why Does My RV Toilet Smell?
It happens to everybody who owns an RV or camper. One day you step into your RV and the smell from the toilet is overpowering.
Even though you’ve flushed regularly and used special cleaners in the bowl and tank, the stench persists and begins to permeate your entire motor home or camper.
The odor is coming from your toilet…it’s that simple. To get rid of the stench you need to identify the problem and fix it.
Your Toilet Smells Because:
- The sewer tank is damaged
- The toilet is leaking
- The tank has not recently been thoroughly cleaned
- The tank has a clog
RV Toilet System Basics
When your RV toilet system functions properly, waste matter mixes with enough fluid to keep it from drying out. These liquids come from urine, bathroom showers and/or sink water. When the sewer tank is closed, the incoming water keeps the waste from drying out; but if the line is kept open, the liquids move out, leaving the solids, and prevents the system from doing its job.
If you use regular household toilet paper in your RV, it is not biodegrade and this becomes a problem. Even if you use RV grade toilet paper, using too much of it can add to the problem.
It’s important to remember that whatever is in the tank - clogged or not - must be sealed. The flapper inside of the toilet is there to do this. If the flapper breaks or becomes blocked and can’t close all the way, the odor from the black water tank enters the RV and makes it smell.
When there are no clogs or leaks, but the bad smell persists, the toilet itself is dirty. Even the best attempts to keep RV toilets sanitized, waste and accumulated dirt can cling, dry up, and begin to smell.
Getting Rid Of the Clog
Getting a corrective clean out depends on the severity of the problem. If you try to empty the reservoir and nothing comes out you may do the dirty job yourself which doesn’t cost anything, or you may need to get help from a professional. This is the only way you can get rid of the smell.
Scour, Sanitize and Add Eco Tank Pro™
Once everything is moving again, clean and scour the tank itself because all of that dry material is still clinging to its sides; ;if you don’t remove it, your toilet will still smell.
Then, sweeten the tank with Eco Tank Pro™ and water. Eco Tank Pro™ holding tank treatment accelerates organic decomposition to remove odors and break down waste and toilet paper. It also cleans sensors and prevents future clogging.
Eco Tank Pro™ contains no perfumes or staining dyes. This powerful formula is environmentally friendly, 100% biodegradable and safe for waste dump stations and septic tanks. It contains no formaldehyde and handles the toughest odors inside your camper or RV.
Our Eco Tank Pro™ freshens sinks and drain lines by dissolving grease and organic sludge that accumulates over time. In addition, by continuously promoting the high metabolism of native bacteria inside the grey tank, Eco Tank Pro™ effectively deodorizes grey tank odors.
Protect and Maintain Your RV System
Having an odor-free RV and camper requires care and ongoing maintenance – both mechanical and preventive. However, that will only happen if you continue to use your toilet and waste water tanks and hoses correctly and keep them clean.
